LRS Provides Safer Prescription Printing at Children’s of UPMC

SPRINGFIELD, IL - July 16, 2008 – Levi, Ray & Shoup, Inc. (LRS) announced the successful implementation of a tamper-proof printing solution at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC (Children’s). The solution, developed by software provider LRS, enables the hospital to ensure compliance with ever-tightening Medicare regulations.

Beginning April 1, a law went into effect, phasing in a requirement for all Medicaid prescriptions to incorporate copy-resistant paper, watermarks and other tamper-proof features. Before the end of the year, three distinct classes of security features will be required, prompting healthcare providers like Children’s to re-assess the state of document security in their front-line operations.

Working together, Children’s and LRS developed and deployed a cost-effective approach to help the hospital comply with the new rules. The joint solution identifies which documents from Children’s Cerner Millennium® clinical information system are prescriptions and prepares this output for printing on special paper. The system also prevents the tamper-proof stock – which costs nearly 25 times as much as regular paper – from being used for non-prescription documents.

One alternative under consideration would have required the customer to purchase new printing hardware for each of their pharmacy locations. Through customization on the part of LRS, the customer was able to leverage their investment in existing printers. The solution passes special data to the printers, directing them to use the tamper-proof stock only when printing a prescription order.

Healthcare providers expecting Medicaid reimbursement for pharmacy orders have until Oct. 1 to comply with the new tamper-resistant printing regulations.
