VSPA for VDI Environments | LRS Output Management

Virtual Session Printer Agent for VPSX

Many organizations seek to implement Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) environments to reduce costs while increasing security, flexibility, and control. However, printing can become more complicated in a VDI environment because unlike traditional desktops, any printer that a user defines after they logon to their desktop is subsequently lost at logoff time.

This leads to user frustration and increased help-desk calls. In addition, basic administrative tasks — such as defining default printers for various models/manufacturers of thin/zero client terminals — can prove quite challenging.

The LRS Approach

Overview of  Virtual Session Printer Agent for VPSX

Using a simple yet powerful web-based interface, authorized staff can define printers for end-users and thin/zero client terminals and designate which printer is the default device for application printing. Intelligent management of user- and terminal-specific printer definitions ensures that a worker always has the ability to print to a nearby device, the printer back in his or her office, or any required location on the network.

The Virtual Session Printer Agent for VPSX® (VSPA) software also lets users add printers permanently to their virtual desktops, so these devices are always accessible across multiple virtual desktop sessions. By making virtual desktop printing more like traditional workstation printing, VSPA software improves the user experience with VDI, which increases overall productivity and reduces support calls.

Administrators can designate which printer is the default device for application printingEnsure that a worker always can print to a nearby device
Users add printers permanently to their virtual desktopsEnd users will always have these printers available across multiple virtual desktop sessions
Associates users, printers, and terminals in an intelligent mannerSimplifies tasks and reduces workload of IT administrators to configure, change and maintain their VDI print Infrastructure
Supports any terminal hardware platformProvides greater choice and flexibility for setup and administration
“Proximity-based” printing for roaming employeesImproves mobility by letting workers conveniently print documents near any terminal location
Makes VDI transparent to users by giving them a similar print capability to that of WindowsReduces support calls due to fewer issues for users

VDI Environments Supported

The VSPA solution works with Citrix® XenDesktop® and Citrix XenApp® software as well as VMWare® Horizon (with View) desktops 4.0 and higher. This helps companies realize the benefits of virtualization without negatively impacting their document-related applications and business processes.

The VSPA solution consists of a Windows desktop agent that executes as part of the master desktop image and a web application for adminstrative tasks that is part of the LRS Enterprise Output Server. The VSPA web application lets adminstrators manage a central printer database that maintains the relationships between users or terminals and their printers, and it can be accessed from any computing platform using a standard web browser.

In addition, the LRS Enterprise Output Server solution runs on the following platforms:

  • Microsoft® Windows
  • IBM® AIX
  • Linux
